The Philippines’ 7th largest island, Mindoro is divided between Oriental Mindoro and Occidental Mindoro in 1950 under the Republic Act No. 505. The latter occupies the western part of the island and bordered by Oriental Mindoro, Verde Island Passage and Mindoro Strait.
Occidental Mindoro is made up of 11 municipalities. Its capital is Mamburao, while the prominent municipality of San Jose is the largest and considered the center of commerce and entertainment. Tagalog is widely spoken in the province, followed by Ilocano, Hiligaynon and Kinaray-a. The province is blessed with rich marine bounties and home to one of the most popular and amazing coral reefs in the country, Apo Reef.
